What are cotillions and what are they for?

while my cousin and i where doing a play ,a friend of the director asked if we wanted to be in a cotillion/beauty pageant. we where both happy but i really want to know what it is. we will also be doing the waltz with boys. is the waltz hard to learn are there any specific things i should do during that dance to execute it well?
