Where do homeless ppl get the cardboard and pen?

I see homeless ppl on the street every day with a cardboard sign saying, i am not a drunk, i have medical problems, plz help me. but if they r homeless where do they get the cardboard and pen? out of a dumpster? i never understood, was it donated?
